Duterte Banned Another US Senator in the Philippines
President Rodrigo Duterte has banned another United States lawmaker, Senator Edward Markey of Massachusetts, from entering the Philippines.
According to the report of Inquirer, President Rodrigo Duterte has banned another American senator from entering the Philippines. The President had previously banned Senator Richard Durbin and Senator Patrick Leahy from entering the Philippines.
Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo confirmed Wednesday that Duterte banned Senator Edward Markey of Massachusetts for calling for the release of Sen. Leila de Lima, and for supporting the entry ban to the US of Filipino officials believed to have had a hand in her detention.
Based on the report, eight other US senators who sponsored Senate Resolution 142 were Marco Rubio, Marsha Blackburn, Chris Coons, Jeff Merkley, Tina Smith, Brian Schatz, Dianne Feinstein and Benjamin Cardin. Panelo did not explain why the ban did not include eight American senators who sponsored the resolution.
The government also threatened that if the United States imposes an entry ban on the US of Filipino officials in connection with Sen. Leila De Lima detention, it will require that all American citizens who wish to visit the Philippines obtain a visa.
