Young Athletes Using Makeshift Shoes During Competition Win Medals
ILOILO CITY – Several young athletes win medals although they are using improvised shoes during a sports competition in Iloilo.
Previously, it has been reported that a female runner named Rhea Bullos wins three gold medals in a running competition without proper running shoes. The athletes wore makeshift shoes during the contest.
Bullos beats her rivals using her improvised shoes in three categories including 400-meter dash Elem Girls, 800-m run Elem Girls, and 1500-m run Elem Girls. The young girl proved that success can be earned through hard work and determination.
Recently, a Facebook user named Leo Solinap reported that aside from Bullos, there are other barefoot runners wearing makeshift shoes win medals in a sports event in the province of Iloilo.
The elementary pupils from the Fifth District of Iloilo win numerous medals during the 2019 Iloilo Schools Sports Council Meet, which was held at the Iloilo Sports Complex. The sports event started last December 7, 2019.
The coaches called the athletes as barefoot runners for joining the athletic event without shoes. They just wrapped the feet with brown plaster for protection against blisters. The runners harvest medals in different events such as hurdles, sprinting and long-distance events.
Coach Joe Marie Sandoy also revealed that the pupils were not used to wear spike shoes instead they use rubber shoes during practice. However, the runners preferred to run barefoot since the oval field is made up of rubber.
“These children are using rubber shoes during practice especially our training grounds are made of soils, grass and sometimes water,” Sandoy said.
Some athletes also received Nike shoes from an unknown donor.
