The eruption shocked everyone as it was one of the most unexpected events of the year. Reports said that there were no signs that the volcano would erupt.

Recently, photos have surfaced that showed some tourists walking near the crater just moments before it erupted. These serve as a reminder that catastrophes can be unexpected and devastating.

After the incident, five people were confirmed to be dead. In addition, eight more were missing and are already presumed to be dead.

The photograph that showed the tourist was taken by an agency called GeoNet. According to an article by LadBible, they are responsible for monitoring geological activity and hazards in New Zealand.

Moreover, they offer information and advice to the public. The agency has everything from seismometers, to UV spectrometers, and cameras set to monitor White Island at all times.

One of their cameras that were positioned at the rim of the crater, captured the group of tourist walking through a trail at about 2:10 p.m. local time. However, just a minute later, the volcano erupted.

After the eruption, the images that followed showed an empty crater as the floors were black with ash. With this, volcanologist Geoff Kilgour said they were aware that people were on the island before the eruption took place.
