The island of Panay is the sixth largest island in the Philippines. It is also the country’s fourth most populous island. It has a landmass of about 12 kilometers squared or 4.6K square miles.

It is, by far, the only island where provinces don’t bear the island’s name. The following provinces are:

  • Aklan (Capital: Kalibo)
    • This province is the northwest part and one of the provinces in the Island. It also includes the famous Boracay Island.
  • Antique (Capital: San Jose de Buenavista)
    • This is also one of the provinces in the island and home of the Iraynun-Bukidnon who speaks the Kinaray-a language.
  • Capiz (Capital: Roxas)
    • Located at the northeastern part and one of the provinces in Panay Island. It is also famous for the Placuna placenta oyster.
  • Iloilo (Capital: Iloilo)
    • One of the provinces in the Panay Island and home of the regional center of the same name.

Its ethnic groups include:

  • Hiligaynon
  • Karay-a
  • Capiznon
  • Aklanon
  • Caluyanon
  • Ati
  • Suludnon

It was formerly caled Simsiman, which is derived from the word “simsim” or “simsimin” which means “to lick something to eat or to drink”

It was named Panay by a Spaniard named Gonzolo Ronquillo who called it “Pan hay” which means “there’s a bread in the island”.
