CYNTHIA VILLAR – In lieu of the report that the Philippines was ranked lowest in reading comprehension, the Villar said she wants DepEd to disband schools that underperform.

Recently, the results of a 2018 worldwide study revealed that the Philippines was ranked lowest among 79 countries in reading comprehension.

The country also scored the second-lowest in math and science along with Panama with 353 and 357 points respectively. Only the Dominican Republic had lower scores.

The Philippines has the biggest percentage of low performers in reading comprehension. This was among economically disadvantaged students.

Because of this, Cynthia was asked about her opinion on this matter in an ambush interview. According to Inquirer, she said that underperforming schools should be disbanded.

Along with this, the Senator also gave a proposition that high-quality schools should be given incentives and disincentives to low-quality ones.

For the Senator, this was a way to get the lower quality schools something to strive for. “Bigyan ng disincentive yung mahihina para namang magkaroon ng wish to excel or challenged to be better“, said Villar.

The study on the country’s profile noted that the average class of 15-year olds in the Philippines is the largest. In addition, the ratio of students to teaching staff is the highest.
