The term has multiple meanings, hence, it is polysemous. This could mean the following:

  • A social class which refers to people with a similar cultural and financial capital which belongs to the middle men. It is categorized into three:
    • haute – upper
    • moyenne – middle
    • petite – petty.
  • its original meaning is “those who live in the borough” or basically, people of the city.

The term came from the modern term bourgeois, which is also derived from the older French word burgeis which means “walled city”. Burgeis is also derived from the term bourg which means marked town, which is also derived from the ancient Frankish term burg, which means town.
