SYMPTOMS

Ruptured ovarian cysts can cause serious symptoms. A regular pelvic exam can help the early detection of this problem. Here are the symptoms:

  • Pelvic pain — a dull or sharp ache in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst
  • Fullness or heaviness in your abdomen
  • Bloating

CAUSES

The ovaries normally grow cyst-like structures called follicles each month and according to the article, most ovarian cysts develop as a result of the menstrual cycle and this condition called functional cysts.

Under the functional cysts, a follicular cyst can happen when a follicle doesn’t rupture or release its egg but continues to grow while the corpus luteum cyst can occur when the fluid accumulates inside the follicle causing the corpus luteum (producing estrogen and progesterone for conception) to grow into a cyst. These types, most of the time, disappear on their own and do not cause any pain.

Meanwhile, here are the other types of cysts not related to the normal function of the menstrual cycle:

Dermoid cysts are cancerous and they are called teratomas that can contain tissue, such as hair, skin or teeth because they form from embryonic cells. Cystadenomas, on the other hand, is developed on the surface of an ovary. They might be filled with watery or mucous material. Meanwhile, Endometriomas is a result of a condition in which uterine endometrial cells grow outside your uterus (endometriosis). According to the article, this happens when some of the tissues attach to your ovary and form a growth.

RISK FACTORS

  • Hormonal problems
  • Pregnancy
  • Endometriosis
