5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Parts of Quezon Province & Manila
5.5 MAGNITUDE – Just a few days after the successive quakes that hit parts of Mindanao, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake rocked Quezon province.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the tectonic tremor started at 4:52 a.m. The depth of the quake was about 7 kilometers northeast of Jomalig town.
Adding to this the tremors were felt in parts of Metro Manila, Camarines Norte, Pampanga, and nearby provinces. However, Phivolcs said there were no reports of damage.
There were also reports of Intensity 4 quakes felt in Guinayangan, Quezon. At this intensity, hanging can swing considerably and you would feel like there are huge trucks passing by.
Aside from this, there were also places hit with minor intensity quakes. Cities like Marikina, Navotas, and Quezon experienced intensity-2 tremors.
Muntinlupa City, on the other hand, felt an intesity-1 quake. These are called scarcely perceptible shaking.
According to a report from ABS-CBN, these are the list of affected areas:
- Intensity 4
- Guinayangan, Quezon; Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte
- Intensity 3
- Pili, Camarines Sur; Mauban, Lopez and Mulanay, Quezon
- Intensity 2
- Marikina City; Malolos City; Gumaca and Dolores, Quezon; Baler, Aurora
- Intensity 1
- Iriga City; Malabon City; San Juan City; Quezon City; Pasig City; Guagua, Pampanga; Talisay, Batangas; Palayan City
With this, Phivolcs stated that the quake would produce aftershocks. Aside from that, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said that the quakes could cause minor infrastructure damage it the epicenter is on land.
Afterward, Solidum told “Umagang Kay Ganda” that the energy produced by the quake is not enough to trigger huge waves. They have also denied that the quake is connected to the Mindanao tremors.
