Children Who Abandon Aging, Sick, Disabled Parents May Face Charges Soon
PANFILO LACSON – Senator Panfilo Lacson had recently revived a measure he filed which seeks to pass a law that penalizes children who abandon their old & sick parents.
Filipino culture is heavily rooted in deep family values. It is no surprise that the Filipino people hold their families at such high importance.
However, there are still some people who don’t necessarily share these ideals. There will always be some people who have no disregard for the state of their parents.
In lieu of this fact, Senator Lacson had recently revived an old measure he filed at the 17th congress. Where he aimed to provide support and benefits to our older and sickly parents.
According to Lacson, the said measure seeks to make non-compliance for the needs of parents a criminal offense. It also aimed to strengthen the filial responsibility of Filipinos.
Based on a report from Philstar, a parent who is in need of support may file a petition for support. Afterward, there would be a support order issued against children who failed or refused to give support.
The bill also stated that the legal representation of the parent that needs support would be provided by the Public Attorneys Office. There would also be no court fees that would be assessed.
Based on the bill, the penalty for not complying with the order could range from 1-6 months of jail time or a fine of P100,000. This is if the respondents fail to give support for three straight months without valid cause.
Lacson also added that if children leave their parents in any given location with the full intention of leaving them would be charged and fined. He said that those could be fined for P300,000, imprisoned up to six years-10 years.
