Senator Panfilo Lacson challenges President Duterte stating that he would join him if the nation leader would visit Pag-asa Island.
In 2016, Mr. Duterte promised during his campaign to ride a jet ski and place the Philippine flag in areas being claimed by the country in Spratly Island.
However, Pag-asa Island is now one of the disputed waters in the West Philippines Sea causing escalating tension in the area.
On Friday (April 5, 2019), Senator Lacson made an offer to join President Duterte if he would visit island of Pag-asa.
“If the President decides to visit the island, I volunteer to join him in my capacity as an elected senator of the Republic and as a freedom-loving Filipino,” Lacson said.
Lacson’s statement came after the Philippine military confirmed that about hundreds of Chinese vessels swarmed Pag-asa Island.
The lawmaker wrote a cryptic post on is Twitter account directing to President Duterte and citing few lines from the Philippine national anthem.
The politician also said that the Philippine government should not allow China to occupy the disputed water.
