Fuji Xerox Co., LTD Gives A Public Notice To Stop Using Xerox As A Verb
XEROX – The most popular name when it comes to photocopying machines urges the public in the Philippines to stop using the brand name as a verb.
You probably heard or said the phrase “Pa Xerox nga po!” multiples time in your lives. However, the company Fuji Xerox said that “Xerox” is a globally recognized registered trademark protected by the law.
The company published a notice on a Philippine broadsheet on Thursday. It stated that their brand is not just another word for copy.
According to the notice taken from ABS-CBN, it said that as a registered trademark, xerox is neither a verb or a common noun. Therefore it should not be used to describe copying or copy services.
The company made an appeal to the Philippine Public: “So please don’t use the word “XEROX” as another word for copy. However, this is not the first time a product became synonymous with a verb in the Philippines.
Back in the days, when talking about having your picture taken, Filipinos would use the term, “pa kodak“. Of course, referring to the company KODAK, which was the most popular camera brand at the time.
This is because of the Filipino’s tendency to pick up certain words and transforming them into their own.
Throughout history, the Philippines was exposed to various cultures, intertwined with its own. Language, in this case, was greatly influenced.
For example, when we say “apir” it actually means “up-here”. The phrase is a common expression in America which means a high five.
The word “sirit” is from the phrase “let’s hear it”. Commonly used when you give up trying to guess something.
