Composée means composite in English. As an adjective the word “composite” means “made up of multiple components; compound or complex”.

Although as a noun the word “composite” is described as a “mixture” of different components. Which sometimes gets confusing when talking about a simple salad.

Translated directly, salade composée would mean a “salad of different components”. Not necessarily a salad with “mixed” components.

You could use a variety of ingredients in a composed salad. In itself, the compound salad could be a full healthy meal using the right ingredients.

Interestingly enough, in other languages the translation of “composed salad” becomes more complicated. This time, English has a more accurate description of the dish.

In German, the salad is called “Gemischte Salate”, and in Spanish it is know as ” “Ensalada Mixta” or “Salad Mixto”. Both their translations describes the salad as “mixed”, which is the polar opposite.

The salad “Niçoise” is also an example of a composed salad. It is made up of potatoes, tuna, green beans, anchovies, and hard-boiled eggs and Niçoise olives.

In an article by the food network, there are many ways to present the compound salad, one of which is called the mounded presentation. In this variant, each component is arranged on a plate in separate mounds.

Each mound is separately dressed as well and may be a salad on it’s own. This could also be paired with several other salads on the plate.

flat presentation is another variant. This is when sliced ingredients are arranged flat on a plate, often times overlapped.

The most popular of these presentations is the molded  presentation. The components are tightly compressed into a variety of molded shapes, held together by a thick sauce or dressing strong enough to hold them.
