This may be a sign that you are at ease with the other person but it can be annoying to other people. “Mechanically, slurping helps the flavor and smell to get to where it’s supposed to be,” Shawn Adibi, DDS, of the University of Texas Health School of Dentistry shared. According to him, slurping can agitate the food in the mouth. This allows the food to spread out homogeneously over the tongue and touching all the taste buds. With this, there is an increase in the secretion of the salivary glands. Although it can be noisy to others, some people do this to better taste the food.

It may look disrespectful to many people but David Solot, who has a PhD in organizational psychology, wrote an explanation to this on Eatocracy.com. He said that sometimes being rude to waiters is not just because a person is really disrespectful. Dr. Solot added that most of the time, the customers are just acting disrespectfully in return. It is because there are waiters who do not do their tasks diligently.

Psychotherapist Irene Rubaum-Keller, the author of Foodaholic, explained this example of annoying dining habits. She said that if a woman grew up in a household full of boys, she will learn to scarf down food. “If you didn’t, the food was gone,” she shared. However, in other situations, this could mean the condition called binge eating disorder. “People who binge don’t always enjoy it. They often don’t even taste the food. They want to get it over with,” she added.
