Law Requiring Schools To Provide Neutral Desks For Students Signed by President Duterte
President Rodrigo Duterte has signed the the bill requiring school to provide neutral desks to all students into law.
Mr. Duterte has signed the Republic Act No. 11394 or the Mandatory Provision of Neutral Desks in Educational Institutions Act as response to the needs of left-handed students. The president signed the bill last August 22 (Thursday).
The new law requires both public and private schools to provide neutral desks for the students, which means a table or an armchair that can be used by right-handed or left-handed school children.
“It shall be obligatory for all educational institutions, both public and private, that make use of armchairs in the classroom to provide neutral desks to all students,” mandated by the new law.
Under the law, educational institution must provide standard desks around ten (10) percent of the student population within a year after the validation of the bill. Sen. Sonny Angara, who authored the bill lauded President Duterte for signing it into a law.
Sonny Angara wrote the bill since around 10 percent of the population are left-handed but the armchairs are designed for right-handed people. Lefties usually suffer from back, neck and shoulder pain when using the standard desks.
