COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE – Here is the meaning of this sentence structure in English and as well as some examples or sample sentences.

The English subject is one of the core subjects in the different year levels under the school curriculum. It is taught from the pre-school years up to college. Its lessons are carefully-organized for a better comprehension.

One of the lessons in English is the sentence structure. Before it is taught, the students must master first the kinds of sentences and as well as the dependent clause and independent clause.

With regards to the sentence structures, there are four(4) types of sentence structure and, in this article, we will discuss the fourth one.

Compound-Complex Sentence

The fourth sentence structure is the compound-complex sentence. It is composed of at least two(2) independent clause and at least one(1) dependent clause.

Here are some examples below:

  • Fatima was watering the plants while Tony was cleaning the car when the bill collector came.
    • Independent Clauses:
      • Fatima was watering the plants
      • Tony was cleaning the car
    • Dependent Clause:
      • when the bill collector came
  • If the package will arrive early, it will be brought to my sister’s house and Gary will be the one who will open it.
    • Independent Clauses:
      • it will be brought to my sister’s house
      • Gary will be the one who will open it
    • Dependent Clause:
      • If the package will arrive early
  • Nancy kept on calling victor while he was out with his friends until morning came.
    • Independent Clauses:
      • Nancy kept on calling victor
      • he was out with his friends
    • Dependent Clause:
      • until morning came
