Here Are Traditional Filipino Games We Enjoyed Back In The Days
TRADITIONAL FILIPINO – Back in the days, we used to play outside with our siblings, cousins and playmates making the most out of what we have.
Traditional Filipino games used to require little to no props to play. Filipino kids can get occupied playing the entire afternoon with slippers, cans, sticks, rubber bands and whatever items they can find and come up a game with.
Although physical activities pose the risk of injuries, it doesn’t mean digital games are completely safe as well. Here’s a list are dangerous online games that caused serious injuries and even death.
Playing with your friends personally, will help form a strong bond between your relationships.
Also, outdoor games that encourage social interactions and physical exercise are good for children’s development.
Here are some Filipino games to refresh your memory:
TUMBANG PRESO
Kids can play this game with items they can find just laying around the house. A can and some slippers.
The mechanics of the game is that one player will play as a guard behind the can. Other players will attempt to knock the can over. When the can is knocked by a player the guard must quickly put it back up as other players will run to retrieve their slippers. Whichever player gets tagged while the can is put upright, will become the new guard player.
LUKSONG BAKA
This game requires no props. The mechanics is pretty simple. One player will play the part of the “baka” or cow. Other players will take turns jumping over the cow, hence the name “luksong baka” or “jumping over a cow”. When jumping, players must make sure their feet don’t touch the cow or fall over, otherwise they will become the new cow.
LANGIT LUPA
This is like a modified game of tag. Players will choose which player will be ‘it’ by singing:
“Langit, lupa impyerno, im – im – impyerno. Sak-sak puso tulo ang dugo. Patay, buhay, Umalis ka na di-yan!“
They will sing the chant over and over and whichever gets pointed to by the end of each chant gets out. The last player to remain will be it.
The game will now proceed and the ‘it’ would chase other players to tag them. But they can only be tagged if their on the ground. If they hop onto a leverage, then they’re safe.
PATINTERO
One of the most popular Filipino games. This requires a chalk, a piece of coal or anything you can draw lines with. (Or just use the lines dividing the roads!)
Played in groups, one group should play as the guards and other players play as the runners. The runners must pass through each lines to the final line without getting tagged by the guards.
