A continent is described as a huge, distinct, land mass which makes up the earth’s surface. Most of these landmasses contains several countries or nations. Here are the following seven continents:

1. Africa

The second largest continent in the world. It has a population of 1.1 million as of 2016 and a mass of 11.6 km². Its largest city is the city of Lagos in Nigeria. It is unique due to the fact that it stretches between the northern and southern temperate zones. It is also rumored to be the birthplace of mankind.

2. Antarctica

The southernmost landmass in the world. Antarctica is basically a huge chunk of ice and serves as the South Pole. It has one of the harshest climates and one of the most unwelcoming terrains. It has a population of about 5K as of 2015 and a mass of 12.9 million km². Its largest city is the McMurdo Station

3. Asia

The largest of all the continents as it makes up 9% of the Earth’s surface, with a mass of 17.2 km². It has a population of about 4.5 million as of 2016 and its largest city is Tokyo, Japan. Asia is widely recognized as a vital part in the world economy.

4. Australia/Oceania

This includes the main country of Australia and the regions of New Guinea, Tasmania and Seram. It has a mass of 2.9 million km² and a population of about 39.9 million. Its largest city is Sydney. It is the smallest continent but is the sixth largest country. Also known as the land Down Under, Australia is the most isolated, remote, and the least influenced continent as he center is basically desert. It is also home to the world’s largest reef also known as the Great Barrier Reef.

5. Europe

Europe has a mass of 3.9 million km² and a population of about 738K. It is the second smallest continent next to Australia. It is home to most of the historic events in the world as most of these events happened and formed this continent.

6. North America

The third largest continent and the north half of America. It has a mass of 9.5 million km² and a population of 579K as of 2016. It’s largest city is Mexico City, Mexico. North America has a very diverse climate, wildlife, and geography.

7. South America

The southern half of America, which has a land mass of 6.8 million km² and a population of 414K as of 2015. Its largest city is São Paulo, Brazil. South America is the mother place of incredible biodiversity and home of the Amazon River.
