PROSE – In this topic, we will discuss one of the forms of literature which deals with the common and natural way of speech: prose.

Definition

A prose is one of the literary forms which has no formal metrical structure since it applies a natural flow of speech, and ordinary grammatical structure, rather than rhythmic structure, which is found in poetry. Basically, a normal conversation or our everyday speech is considered a prose.

Types

  • Nonfictional – these works are mainly based on facts or real life situations. It includes some of the following:
    • Biography – a narrative that deals with the life of a person
    • Essay – a report on the writer’s reflection on an author’s point of view or outlook.
    • Journalism – basically reports news and current events
  • Fictional – Works that is fully or partially imaginary. Some of which includes:
    • Fables – stories where animals are personified.
    • Fantasy – tales which includes instances of wizards, magical creatures and the like.
    • Novel – a relatively long work of narrative fiction
  • Heroic – literary works that may be written down or recited, and which employs many of the formulaic expressions found in oral tradition. Some of which includes:
    • Legend – story of a national folk hero or sometimes how things began.
    • Tall tales – humorous stories with blatant exaggerations, such as swaggering heroes who do the impossible with calmness.
  • Prose Poetry – A form with elements of poetry.
