POETRY – In this topic, we will discuss one of the forms of literature which deals with the rhythmic and metric way of speech: poetry.

Definition

Poetry is one of the two types of literature which is an interplay of words and rhythm. The form includes rhythm and meter, in which rhythm demonstrates the long and short patterns through stressed and unstressed syllables, particularly in verse form, while meter is a set of rules governing the number and arrangement of syllables in each line.

Types

  • Narrative – basically a form that tells a story. Some of it includes:
    • Epic – a poem which tells the tales of a hero who demonstrates the long and short patterns through stressed and unstressed syllables, particularly in verse form.
    • Romance – deals with chivalry and love.
  • Dramatic – its primary goal is to involve the reader in an experience or situation and makes tension , immediacy, expectation, and conflict.
  • Lyrical – the most appealing of the three. Lyrical is associated with music and sound. Some of which includes:
    • Ode – a long poem that is elevated in tone and elaborated in style
    • Sonnet – a fixed poem which consists of fourteen lines divided into an octave and setset; or three quartrains and a couplet
    • Elegy – a sorrowful song made for someone who recently died.
