China’s Warning System Not Suitable for Big One, Phivolcs Says

The state seismology agency Phivolcs said that China’s early earthquake warning system is not suitable for the major earthquake called the “Big One”

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that the warning system used by China to detect earthquake is not applicable for the expected magnitude 7.2 earthquake.

China uses the system to detect upcoming tremors by sending a warning signal to the public before an earthquake occurs.

Warning System

The system has been invented after a magnitude 7.9 earthquake took the lives of around 8,000 people in China.

PHIVOLCS’ Seismological Observation and Earthquake Division OIC Ishmael Narag explained that earthquake sensors are required in order to use the warning system properly.

Narag explained that the device is less useful when an earthquake occurs near the warning system.

Warning System

“There’s no way to apply this for the ‘Big One’ because with the ‘Big One’ andyan lang in our backyard ‘yung source which is the valley fault so pag nagkaroon ng event, we have what, less than two seconds?” Narag said.

The “Big One” refers to the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that might hit Metro Manila and its nearby areas within the West Valley Fault.
