In a previous report, a mislabeled container van was shipped to the country through the port of Misamis Oriental. Malacañang said the trashes will be reshipped back to Hong Kong.

An official from Mindanao Container Terminal – who also lead the shipment of the waste back to Hong Kong – considered he shipment a “victory for the Filipinos.”

Subport collector John Simon from MCT revealed during a conversation with reporters last Monday that Hong Kong’s move to ship the container of hazardous waste labelled as “assorted electronic accessories” is considered illegal in both Hong Kong and Philippines laws. It is also a violation of the laws under the Basel Convention.

He also expressed his concern about nations seemingly treating the Philippines as a dumping site:

“It’s simple. They want to make us their dumping ground. But they did not prevail.”

In total, the collected electronic waste from the Chinese administrative region weighed up to 2.56 tons. All of which was shipped back on board the SITC Nagoya container ship.

The ship left on June 3, 2019. About four months after the trash initially entered the port in Misamis.

The contents of the container were comprised of:

  • torn/broken gadget components
  • plastic wastes
  • 22 sling bags

This is according to an article from Inquirer.

The conainer arrived at MCT port in Tagoloan, part of Misamis Oriental province last February 2.

It was then detained by the state’s Bureau of Customs-10 (BOC-10) for mislabeling or “misdeclaration” of contents.

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
