Siargao Cafe Using ‘Lukay’ Straws Earns Praises Online
The online community praised a Café in Siargao for using ‘Lukay’ straws made of coconut fronds with the aim to replace plastic straws.
Café Editha in Dapa, Surigao del Norte is now using “Lukay” straws to reduce the plastic pollution posing risk to marine life.
Lukay straw is made up of palm leaves or coconut fronds, which is an environment-friendly material.
Sarah Tiu, Café Editha’s manager always wanted to end the plastic pollution and eliminate the plastic wastes in her resto.
The lady manager initially used paper and stainless straws but the customers didn’t like using those alternatives.
Tiu decided to use lukay straws after her family went to Corregidor Island in Siargao that uses straws made of palm leaves on their fresh buko (Coconut).
The lukay drinking straw is easy to make and decomposable, according to Sarah Tiu.
The impressive idea captured the attention of netizens who also made their own drinking straws made of palm leaves.
