Bicam Approves Giving 100% Service Charge To Restaurant, Hotel Workers

Bill Seeking To Give 100% Service Charges To Workers Earns Approval of Bicam

BICAM – The House of Representatives and the Senate approved the bill seeking to give 100% service charge to hotel and restaurant workers.

In the Philippines, it is a habit of a lot of people to leave some money as a tip after eating in a restaurant or staying in a hotel. These people usually do it as an appreciation of the service of the workers.

However, the amount left by customers may not fully go into the pockets of the hotel and restaurant workers. There are establishments that observe the 85-15 ratio.

Under the said rule, 85% of the collected service charge from the customers go to the workers but the 15% remains to the establishment to cover up the losses.

Currently, the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate are pushing for a measure seeking to give 100% of the service charge from the customers to the workers.

Senator Joel Villanueva is one of those leading the push for a bill that seeks to give 100% of the service charge to hotel and restaurant workers. Based on a report on GMA News, it recently gained the approval of Bicam.

According to Sen. Villanueva, after forty(40) years, it finally happened that the full service charge given by customers will go to the workers in the restaurants and hotels.

“We were able to thresh out the difference between the versions of the House and Senate,” he said.

Based on the report, Sen. Villanueva expressed that there are a lot of complaints that some establishment even give only 15% of the service charge to the workers.

“Baligtad pa nga ang nangyayari. 15% ang nakukuha ng mga waiters tapos 85% ang nakukuha ng establishment,” the Senator expressed.

Reportedly, the next move would be the ratification of the bicam report by both chambers of the government. Sen. Villanueva expects that it will happen later today.
