One Dead & Three Missing After Cargo Ship Sinks Off Japan Due to Collision
One crew member died and three others are gone missing after a steel-carrying cargo ship sank off Japan due to a collision with another ship.
Local Coast Guard official Hiromitsu Kawaguchi reported that Japanese cargo ships ‘Senshomaru’ and ‘Sumihomaru’ collided along the Pacific waters off Chiba prefecture.
One of the missing crew members was found inside of Senshomaru located near the site of the collision at a depth of 30 meters.
The 499-ton Sumihomaru’s four crew members were all safe after the incident.
“Senshomaru seems to have sunk at the scene of the collision. Coast Guard patrol boat Matsushima rescued the captain of Senshomaru,” Kawaguchi said.
Kawaguchi revealed that the area was covered by a dense fog during the accident and oil had been spotted around the site of the collision.
A special search-and-rescue unit together with five patrol vessels and a helicopter was launched to find the missing crew members.
Another special unit has been also deployed to contain the oil leak in the water.
The missing crew members and the ship captain are all Japanese, according to Kawaguchi.
