Salvador Panelo has this statement amid the resignation of Kiko Pangilinan
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo stated this amid the resignation of Senator Kiko Pangilinan as LP President: “I think they’ve already accepted defeat”.
Pangilinan resigned as the President of Liberal Party on Tuesday and handed his resignation letter to Vice President Leni Robredo, the chairperson of the political party.
Reportedly, his resignation will take effect on June 30, 2019.
The Senator said that he is primarily accountable to the defeat of opposition’s senatorial candidates or the Otso Diretso.
“As campaign manager for the Otso Diretso slate, I was unable to ensure our victory in the elections and I therefore assume full responsibility for the outcome and hold myself primarily accountable for this defeat,” he said.
Based on a previous report, LP secretary-general Kit Belmonte, the reelected congressman of the 6th district of Quezon City, also resigned.
However, VP Robredo, reportedly refused to accept their resignations and they were told to “pick up the pieces”.
With regards to this issue, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo was asked to react.
According to the report from ABS-CBN, the resignation of Kiko Pangilinan is LP’s “internal matter”.
When asked if this a sign that the opposition has already accepted their defeat, the spokesperson has this statement: “I think they’ve already accepted defeat.”
“Even the Vice President issued a statement,” he added.
