A member of Iglesia ni Cristo refused to follow the bloc voting in his church
Twitter user Favian Cuneta, a self-confessed member of Iglesia ni Cristo refused to follow the bloc voting which is implemented to his religious group.
The 1987 Constitution of the Philippines stated this with regards to the separation of state and church.
“The separation of Church and State shall be inviolable. (Article II, Section 6), and, No law shall be made respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference, shall forever be allowed. No religious test shall be required for the exercise of civil or political rights. (Article III, Section 5)….. “
The Iglesia ni Cristo or INC has been known for their “bloc voting”. A few days before the election, the church’s administration releases a list of the politicians they are endorsing.
Based on a report from ABS-CBN, for Election 2019, the religious group endorsed these senatorial candidates:
- Sonny Angara
- Nancy Binay
- Pia Cayetano
- Ronald Dela Rosa
- Jinggoy Estrada
- Christopher “Bong” Go
- Lito Lapid
- Imee Marcos
- Grace Poe
- Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr.
- Francis Tolentino
- Cynthia Villar
However, this list did not sit well with INC member Favian Cuneta. He strongly refused the order from his religious leader.
Through his Twitter post, Cuneta stressed out that he used his conscience in voting.
“Iglesia akong pinanganak at Iglesia rin ako mamatay pero ang BOTO KO AY KONSYENSYA KO. I will vote for OTSO DIRETSO in the Senate!” he wrote.
He included a photo of the senatorial candidates from the group Otso Diretso.
In line with his conviction when it comes to his right to vote, the Iglesia ni Cristo member received positive feedback from netizens.
Here are some of the comments.
