The Province Of Misamis Occidental Decided To Start Putting Bamboo Straws In The Market
MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL – The province took a huge leap toward becoming an eco-friendly community by producing and selling reusable bamboo straws.
The problem of plastic pollution is probably one of the biggest threat to our environment. Since plastic is non-biodegradable, single use plastic products often pile up and become a huge issue.
To combat these problems, some communities started looking for alternatives to single use plastic products. For instance, Siliman Psych Society started selling metal counterparts for plastic straws.
Meanwhile, in Misamis Occidental, Jaylo Estoque if the local tourism office stated that bamboo straws were being sold at 10 pesos each.
The booth selling these straws can be found at Misamis Occidental Enterprise Development and Research Center, Oroquieta City.
This is according to an article from Inquirer.
In an interview with Inquirer, Estoque – who was also the manager of the mentioned center, revealed that their office has managed to convine the town of Concepcion to produce the straws since the mountainous area had an abundance of bamboo plants.
He also said that the idea of selling bamboo straws could also be an additional source of income for indigenous people.
The idea popped up as he traveled to Bukidnon, where he saw that there are actual stores there that sell bamboo straws.
Estoque discourage the use of public straws and switch to using bamboo straws instead.
Saying that the organic product isn’t only environmental friendly but also practical and reusable.
It would really help us a lot if we all just practiced proper wasted management especially plastics since the Philippines is listed as one of the major plastic polluters of the earth’s oceans.
That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
