Here’s Reason Why Filipina Runner Gives Silver Medal To Opponent
FILIPINA RUNNER – Here is the reason why the Filipina runner Abigail Manzano gave her silver medal to her opponent.
The Arafura Games is a multi-sport event that was held biannually. Teams from different parts of the world compete in a week-long game.
The Philippines is among the countries who participated in the 2019 Arafura Games.
Based on a report from Spin, Several Pinoy athletes bagged gold medals on Arafura Games.
Pinoy winners of the competition include Nicko Caparoso, Bruce, Pernia, Kate Diaz and Abigail Manzano.
The trackster from Palawan, Manzano, did a heartwarming gesture towards her opponent from the Northern Territory named Makayla Siddons.
Manzano and Siddons competed on the women’s 800-meter run. The Pinay finished on the third spot and she was awarded with a silver medal after Siddons got disqualified due to lane infringement.
“I got pulled aside and it really shattered me and broke my heart when I got told that I have been disqualified because I stood on one of the lanes by about two centimeters. It shattered me,” said Siddons.
According to the report, Siddons had no idea that the Filipina came looking for her after learning that she got disqualified. Manzano decided to give her silver medal to Siddons.
“I never met anyone who would just willingly give away their medal like that to me.”
“When she offered it, I teared up and got very emotional and I had just the biggest smile on my face. I didn’t know what to say. I was so shocked and just (thinking) no one would ever do that. She is so nice and such a good sport … I was very emotional and teared up, and wanted to cry and I hugged her for a long time,” she added.
Based on the report, the Pinay runner expressed that she saw the determination of Australian athlete so she gave away her silver medal. She insisted Siddons to accept the medal as a remembrance.
“Nakita ko po ‘yung eagerness niya na manalo sa event na ‘yun…”
“Yun lang ‘yung event niya na magkaka-medal siya. Naawa ako sa kanya na ‘yun na nga lang ang medal na matatanggap niya, mawawala pa sa kanya… Kung sa kanila man, disqualified siya, para sa akin na kalaban niya, siya pa rin ‘yung silver,” Manzano added.
