Korean Businesses In Boracay Outnumbers The Chinese

There Are More Korean-Owned Businesses In The Boracay Island

KOREAN BUSINESSES – Filipino restaurant owners do not mind Chinese businesses popping up, claiming there are more Korean-owned businesses on the Island.

Boracay Island, being one of the most visited tourist spots in the country, is a great place to run businesses. The island was put under rehabilitation for some time and is now back in business.

Meanwhile, one of the Filipino business owners turned out to be a co-owner of a Chinese restaurant. He said that the reaction of the Filipino community towards the prospering Chinese businesses on the island surprised him.

The businessman [he asked for his identity to be covered] said that at least three to four years ago, there were no same reactions when the Koreans came.

This is based on an article from Inquirer.

He also explained that Koreans do not only stick with restaurants. They also have other businesses. Such as:

“…hotels, health spas and massage parlors, bars, coffee shops, groceries, dive shops and other water sports and activities, and there are a lot of (Korean-owned) travel agencies.”

The appearances of Chinese businesses shocked local residents of the Island. Especially the businesses put up along the main road.

Many people spoke their thoughts on signs and menus written in Chinese.

However, Malay Officials from Aklan said that they will impose requirement for foreign businesses to create signs that are in English more than other languages.

Another Filipino restaurant owner, who also wished to keep his identity hidden, said that he does not mind the appearance of these businesses “…as long as all of them adhere to the laws and requirements to become a legitimate business.”

Chinese tourists have been the most frequent visitors of the Island for the past years. Which is exactly why putting up Chinese establishments on the island is a reasonable choice.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, according to the article, ensured that the labor department will keep an eye on Chinese establishments to ensure that they comply with the law. Especially if the Chinese establishment would “…hire foreign workers when there are Filipinos who are fit for these jobs.”

That is al there is to it, at least for now, we’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
