The Department Of Health Warns People Attempting To Perform Extreme Penitence
PENITENCE PERFORMERS – The Department Of Health advises the public to be careful of doing acts of penitence during the Holy Week as it might cause heatstroke, infection and/or tetanus.
The heat recently has been a major concern of many Filipinos. DOH has released several warnings to the public to combat these threat.
Even if the nails, whips and other instruments for self-flagellation acts were sterilized, it can still cause infection. Department of Health Undersecretaty Eric Domingo said this during an interview.

Eric Domiggo said, the Department of Health does not recommend the use of antibiotic ‘before’ doing the acts as it will only lead to exposure to ‘anti-microbial resistance.’
Anti-microbial resistance is the acquired ability of a microbe to resist medication that is once used to treat it.
He explained that you should only take antibiotic ‘after’ you acquire the wound in his statement:
“You take antibiotic after you acquire wounds or cuts to prevent tetanus. They also must make sure that their wounds are properly cleaned.”
Health Secretary Francisco Doque III also avoid putting themselves in situations that may induce heatstroke or any other health threat during the hot weather.
He said, people should ready up for Visita Iglesia by bringing bottle, water, packaged food and umbrellas when going to the church.
Hypertension could also be worse under the sun’s heat. So people with hypertension are advised to take maintenance medicine for hypertension.
The public should also minimize their participation in outdoor activities and avoid outdoor activities between 10 am to 3 pm.
