DepEd Eyes To Prohibit Election Candidates In Graduation Ceremonies

DepEd Plans To Ban Political Candidates In Graduation Ceremonies

The Department of Education (DepEd) is planning to prohibit the election candidates to deliver a speech in graduation ceremonies.

The Education Department is now planning to ban the candidates from speaking during graduation rites.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) also agreed to the proposal of DepEd describing the measure as a good development.

Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan explained that they will still discuss the matter aiming to prevent candidates from turning the graduation rites into a political activity.

“Pag-uusapan namin ‘yan dahil, obviously, it’s not a political activity. It is not meant directly to ask for the vote of a person. Pero kung mauwi sa ganun ay ‘yun ang pinagbabawal,” Malaluan said.

However, Malaluan said that candidates could still guest in graduation ceremonies but they should not use it as an electioneering activity.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez also described the proposed measure as a very good development.

Jimenez also said that public schools may not look good for having political candidates during graduation rites.
