Netizens react to the statement of Erik Matti about the present situation of the Philippine film industry
Prominent movie director Erik Matti said this about the film industry in the Philippines: “We’re on life support & we need resuscitation” and here are the reactions of netizens.
From the start of January until now, there have been several Pinoy films shown in cinemas, such as ‘Bato’ and ‘Tol’ both shown on January 30 and ‘Hanggang Kailan’ and ‘Elise’ on February 6.
Unfortunately, the said movies did not create a positive blockbuster outcome and this situation alarmed Direk Erik.
Through his recent Facebook post, the filmmaker dissected the dire situation where the film industry in the country is trapped now.
“This is not a slow death anymore. We are on life support and we need resuscitation,” he said.
For him, the government should intervene with this problem in the industry.
He also pointed out that even Metro Manila Film Festival claimed its success but the reality stated otherwise.
“Even MMFF no matter how much they claim with pride that it was a hit, it wasn’t. It didn’t make as much money as the previous years. And instead of looking at the problem
In addition, he questioned what could be the factor or factors affecting the downfall of Pinoy films.
“We cannot go on making movies where no one sees them. We cannot blindly just trudge along busily working on our films without thinking about whether all this passion is really worth it.
He added “We cannot keep on spending millions for movies that no one gets to see. This is alarming. SOMEONE SOMEWHERE SOMEHOW SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.”
At the end of his statement Erik Matti asked these questions: “Are we really doing something for the film industry where it matters most? Are we really getting our films to the audience it was actually made for? Or are we just bringing them to the small audience we embarrassingly deserve?”
In line with this, here are some comments from netizens.
