DOH Gives Update on Number of Injury Cases Caused by Firecracker Since Start of December 2018

FIRECRACKER – The Department of Health (DOH) gave an update on the number of injury cases caused by firecrackers since December 2018 started.

Undeniably, the use of firecrackers every December has become a part of the Filipino tradition. Many were influenced by the belief of Chinese people that the noise drives away bad luck.

Every December, almost every city in the Philippines has a special spot wherein firecracker of many types are being sold. It has become part of the New Year celebration of many people.

However, on the other side, several people spend New Year in hospitals due to injury caused by a firecracker. That is the main reason why the Department of Health (DOH) and the government want to prevent its usage.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has previously released the list of prohibited firecrackers this New Year 2019. Its usage, manufacturing, distribution, and selling got corresponding penalties.

Recently, the DOH gave an update on the number of injury cases caused by a firecracker since December 2018 started.

Based on a recent report on ABS-CBN News, speaking to DZMM, Health Secretary Francisco Duque expressed that only 46 injury cases were recorded.

The record now is 51% lower than the record in 2017 and it is 80% lower than the five-year average record.

According to the report, Duque credits the Executive Order signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in 2017 as a big factor in the lowering of the injury cases caused by firecracker.

The President signed the Executive Order 28 last year and it sets limit on the “community fireworks display”.

Despite the lowering record, the DOH Secretary continues to remind the public to be cautious about the use of firecrackers. He stressed the future of the children is at risk with the use of it for a short celebration.
