75-80 Percent Chance of El Niño Expected Over Next 3 Months, WMO Says
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said that there is a 75-80 percent of El Niño phenomenon for the next three months.
WMO’s climate prediction branch head Maxx Dilley that an impending dry spell phenomenon was expected in the next few months that may affect the weather pattern in some regions
However, the possible El Niño will not be as strong as the 2015-2016 phenomenon linked to coral bleaching, flood, and drought.
Dilley explained that the drought may still affect the weather patterns in many regions and may combine with long-term climate change boosting the global temperature next year.
“It can still significantly affect rainfall and temperature patterns in many regions, with important consequences to agricultural and food security sectors… and public health,” Dilley said
“It may combine with long-term climate change to boost 2019 global temperatures,” the WMO head added.
Eastern Pacific Ocean’s periodic warming causes the El Niño phenomenon that usually occurs every three to seven years.
