Seven SC Justices Face Impeachment Complaints Filed By Lawmakers

Lawmakers Filed Impeachment Complaints Against Seven SC Justices

SEVEN SC JUSTICES – On Thursday (August 23),  lawmakers filed complaints against seven SC justices who ejected chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Based on the report, Sereno was removed from office following the 8-6 voting results over the petition to oust her because of an “invalid appointment”. Months ago, there was a petition to expel her on the basis that her appointment is not valid.

Recently, the following Supreme Court justices were accused of accountable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust due to agreeing to Sereno’s ejection via quo warranto:

  • Teresita Leonardo-de Castro;
  • Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin;
  • Francis Jardeleza;
  • Noel Tijam;
  • Andres Reyes Jr; and
  • Alexander Gesmundo

According to a report from Rappler, 4 of the justices: De Castro; Peralta; Bersamin; and Reyes, albeit facing impeachment, are competing to become the new chief justice.

Four out of the so-called “Magnificent 7”, a 7-man opposition lawmakers from the House of Representatives, will be the ones who will file the impeachment case against the 7 justices. These four are:

  • Edcel Lagman from Albay 1st District;
  • Gary Alejano from Magdalo;
  • Teddy Baguilat Jr from Ifugao; and
  • Tom Villarin from Akbayan

Lagman, one of the four, said that the filing will push through later. He confirmed that it’s because of the quo warranto and added that Martires is excluded from the complaint because he is now the Ombudsman.

As per the report, Lagman’s office later issued an advisory to the House reporters that the “Magnificent 7” lawmakers will hold a press conference at exactly 3 pm.
