Scientist: Boracay Residents Can Use Green Algae As Source Of Livelihood

A Filipina scientist said that the Boracay residents can use green algae collected from the shoreline as a source of livelihood.

Maria Rovilla Luhan a marine biologist from the Southeast Asia Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) promotes the cash in the trash in line with the government’s effort in rehabilitating the Boracay Island.

Luhan explained that the green algae collected from Boracay’s coastal area contain a great amount of protein, which could be a source of livelihood.

“So pwede nilang i-offer sa mga feed millers para i-substitute dun sa mga source ng protein ng kanilang feed,” Luhan said quoted by Yahoo PH.

The Pinay scientist suggested that the green algae can be decontaminated through drying and selling it instead of throwing them.

In that way, the algae would be safe for the consumption of farm animals.

The scientist said that seaweed should be placed on a protective sheet to separate it from sand to increase its value and to maintain the quality of the product.

She also believes that the green algae could be an alternative source of income for the Boracay residents aside from the government’s proposed subsidy.
