Associate Justice Teresita De Castro Nominated By Supreme Court As Ombudsman

The Supreme Court (SC) has nominated Associate Justice Teresita De Castro to replace Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales.

Last Wednesday (May 02, 2018), Teresita De Castro has been nominated by retired associate justice Arturo Brion as Ombudsman in a letter to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).

Brion’s 2-page letter states that De Castro is more than qualified to replace Morales after serving the government with competence and integrity.

“Her long years in the prosecutorial service (almost 19 years) and in the Sandiganbayan (more than 10 years), not to mention her more than a decade of experience as an associate justice of the Supreme Court qualify her for the position of Ombudsman,” Brion wrote quoted by ABS-CBN.

However, De Castro was set to retire from the Supreme Court in October 2018 and yet to accept the nomination for the post.

De Castro is also one of those who had testified against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno during its impeachment hearing.

The Associate Justice is an alumna of the University of the Philippines and has been appointed to the Supreme Court last 2007.

Brion also said that De Castro has already received numerous awards for working in the Sandiganbayan and serving as a peace negotiator during the terms of late former president Corazon Aquino and former president Fidel Ramos.
