French Museum Found Out That Half Of Its Collection Consists Of Fakes
A French museum found out that more than half of its collection consists of fakes, which is considered as a catastrophe for the region.
On Sunday (April 29, 2018), the local mayor said described the discovery of fake collections at the art museum in the south of France as a catastrophe.
“Knowing that people have visited the museum and seen a collection most of which is fake, that’s bad. It’s a catastrophe for the municipality,” mayor Yves Barniol said.
The discovery of the fake collections took place last Friday (April 27, 2018) after the museum conducted an extensive renovation work.
Etienne Terrus museum has been re-opened by the tiny 8,000-strong community of Elne just outside Perpignan, which was dedicated for the masterpiece of a local artist who was born in 1857 and died in 1922.
Mayor Yves Barniol said that an art historian who was called to reorganize the museum found out that about 60 percent of 80 paintings in the museum was fake.
Eric Forcada, an art historian discovered the counterfeit paintings after the ink signature of one painting by Etienne Terrus wiped away after passing his white glove.
Forcada alerted the region and ask the panel experts to confirm his findings. The result shows that about 82 out of 140 artworks were fake.
Terrus paintings could fetch up to 15,000 euros ($18,200) and drawings and watercolours would sell for up to 2,000 euros, Forcada said prior to the discovery.
