Palace Official Denies NFA Rice Shortage In The Country

Assistant Secretary Jonas Soriano of the Office of the Cabinet Secretary has denied the NFA rice shortage in the Philippines.

On Tuesday (April 04, 2018), Jonas Soriano said that the supply of NFA rice reserve has not yet depleted.

Soriano said that the supply of the regular rice in the country remains stable, but the supply of reserved NFA rice somehow was dwindling.

Previously, the Grain Retailers Confederation of the Philippines revealed that there is no more supply of NFA rice in Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon prompting Soriano to make his statement.

However, the assistant secretary that the public should not be alarmed although the country’s supply of NFA rice is dwindling.

He also said that NFA management should have a 15-day buffer stock at any time in case of calamities, according to the law.

President Rodrigo Duterte has also ordered the NFA management to import 250, 000 metric tons of rice due to the looming crisis on the government-subsidized rice.

“This rice issue is a very sensitive issue. It involves production, importation, and involves so many branches of government so that’s why the president wanted NFA to be under the Office of the President,” Soriano said quoted by ABS-CBN.
