DILG Eyes Boracay’s Temporary Closure On April 26

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said that they are planning to set Boracay’s temporary closure on April 26, 2018.

On Wednesday (March 21, 2018), the inter-agency council in charge of Boracay was eyeing the temporary closure of Boracay on April 26, according to DILG.

However, DILG Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing said that there’s still no specific date and April 26 is not yet a deal.

Boracay’s Temporary Closure

Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, Interior Undersecretary and Officer-in-Charge Eduardo Año, and Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu had an interagency meeting, which leads them to plan a closure spanning two months to a year.

Densing said that a maximum closure of one year was recommended by Secretary Cimatu, but if the rehabilitation of the island will be done before one year the operation of the country’s top tourist spot will immediately resume.

The DILG Asec also explained that the decision regarding Boracay’s closure still depends on President Rodrigo Duterte.

“At the end of the day it depends on the President, but what will happen is that there’s always be that 30-day notice (to residents and businesses),” Densing said quoted by CNN Philippines.
