Apo Whang-Ud Onggay Nominated By Senate As National Living Treasure

The traditional tattoo artist Apo Whang-Ud Onggay has been nominated by the Senate for the National Living Treasures Award.

On Tuesday (February 27, 2018), the Senate nominates the traditional tattoo artist Apo Whang-Ud Onggay for the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) for preserving the traditional tattoo art of Kalinga.

Senator Nancy Binay’s Resolution No.2 and Senator Sonny Angara’s No. 538 have been already approved by Senate.

Binay said that bestowing the National Living Treasures Award will not only recognize the beauty of ancient art but will also help the Filipino culture to survive and remain throughout the years.

Angara also said that the “Mambabatok” was renowned for her batek, which she started practicing during her childhood and now receiving both local and international recognition.

Apo Whang-Ud is known as “Mambabatok” or a master tattoo artist of “batek”, which is a folk skin inscriptions of Kalinga. She was also the only surviving Kalinga traditional tattoo artist.

“It is only proper to nominate Whang-ud for the GAMABA or the National Living Treasures Award for her exceptional embodiment of the Filipino’s rich heritage, not only to honor her and similar individuals who contribute and enrich the Filipino cultural identity and history, but also to preserve and to further promote traditional folk arts for the benefit of future generations,” Angara said quoted by ABS-CBN.

The National Living Treasures award or GAMABA recognizes the Filipino traditional folk artists for their contributions to the country’s national heritage.
