Heavy Rains, Floods Affects Thousands Of Families In Negros Occidental

The heavy rains and floods have affected thousands of families in different municipalities in Negros Occidental.

On Friday (January 12, 2018), the province of Negros Occidental experienced a heavy downpour, which triggered flash floods and landslides in various localities.

In Victorias City, about 3, 000 families were affected by the floods and 80 families in Talisay City. While Silay City experienced a landslide.

Class suspensions were also ordered by Mayor Francis Frederick Palance at all levels after the water levels increase in 17 out of 26 villages.

Mayor Palanca has also ordered City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council with different stakeholders to prepare the resident living in the affected areas for evacuation.

The neck-deep floods in several barangays in the city of Victorias has prompted over 1, 400 families to evacuate, according to City Disaster Risk Reduction Officer Rodolfo Reiterado.

The floods ruined at least three houses and affect about 18, 000 families or 3, 000 families.

In Talisay City, about 78 families were affected by the floods and also destroyed a house in Barangay Zone 12.

The water level in Minulu-an and Matab-ang Bridge also rise up, which causes flash floods.

In Silay City, the heavy rain caused a landslide in Hacienda Hilado in Barangay Guimbala-on, which causes a road blockage.

On Friday afternoon, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Division head Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian said that the area was impassable but it was already cleared.
