World’s Critically-Endangered Species Spotted In Bacolod
One of the most critically-endangered species in the world called Spoonbill Sandpaper was recently spotted in Negros Occidental.
A spoonbill sandpiper, one of the endangered species in the world has been spotted at the Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands Conservation Area (NOCWCA).
The members of the Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. (PBCFI) was able to take photos of the Spoon-billed sandpiper or known as science as Calidrispygmea.

The endangered shorebirds was seen in Barangay Tibsok, San Enrique town, according to PBCFI acting president Errol Gatumbato.
Gatumbato said that the three Spoonbill sandpipers have been accidentally documented and counted by PBCFI senior biologist Godfrey Jakosalem while preparing for the annual waterbird count at Tibsok.
The critically-endangered species have red-brown head, neck, and breast with dark brown streaks. It measures about 14 to 16 centimeters long with speculate bill.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has included the Spoonbill sandpiper in the list critically endangered species because of its extremely small population.
The massive reduction of the shorebirds’ population was due to numerous factors including passage, breeding and wintering grounds.
“The threats to the existence of this species are compounded with disturbance, pollution, hunting, and the effect of climate change,” Gatumbato said quoted by Inquirer.
