Maute Group Continue to Recruit Civilians Around Marawi City, AFP Says
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has revealed that the Maute Group continue to recruit civilians around Marawi City.
On Friday (December 15, 2017), the military said that the remnants of the ISIS-inspired Maute Terror Group continue to recruit the civilians around the beleaguered city of Marawi as their members, which threatens the peace again in Mindanao.
The members of the Philippine military were closely monitoring the said recruitment activities in the immediate vicinity, the site in Marawi City wherein the lives of nearly a thousand extremists were lost during the 5-month long gun battle, according to Armed Forces Spokesperson Col. Edgard Arevalo.
“Dito natin nakikita ‘yung nagi-i-intensify pa rin sila in the sense na hindi sila humihinto sa kanilang ginagawang recruitment at patuloy na pagkumbinsi na sumali sa kanilang hanay. And of course may mga offer pa rin sila ng financial remunerations kagaya nito,” Arevalo said quoted by ABS-CBN.
Arevalo said that the youth and the relatives of the terrorists are the easiest targets of the extremists because they are most exposed and vulnerable to the ideologies of the militants.
Meanwhile, President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for martial law extension in Mindanao has been granted by the Congress until December 31, 2018.
Duterte’s request for the extension of martial law was prompted by the recent threats from the Islamist terrorists and communist rebels in the country.
