DOST-PHIVOLCS Raises Kanlaon Volcano’s Alert Status
KANLAON VOLCANO – The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) released a notice about the raising of the alert status of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island.
The Kanlaon volcano is an ‘active stratovolcano’ found in Negros, Philippines. This active volcano which is also sometimes spelled as ‘Canlaon’ volcano is the highest point on the island.
Recently, the DOST-PHIVOLCS has released a notice about the raising of the said volcano’s alert status.
Based on the notice released, from Alert Level 1 or Low Level of Unrest, the said volcano is now at the Alert Level 2 or Moderate Level of Unrest. For the past 24 hours, there is a total of 279 “deep” volcanic earthquakes by Kanlaon volcano as recorded through the seismic monitoring network.
Furthermore, based on the DOST-PHIVOLC’s notice, the number of the volcanic earthquakes detected daily since August 18, 2017 continue to increase.
The Alert 2 or the ‘Moderate Level of Unrest’ which is the current alert status of the Kanlaon volcano means there is a chance that magma may intrude at depth. It may or not lead to “magmatic eruption”.
Based on the notice, the public and as well as the local government units are reminded that they are not allowed to enter the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) as there is a chance of “phreatic eruptions”. Pilots are also prohibited from flying close to the summit of the said volcano.
The said volcano is still under the monitoring of the DOST-PHIVOLCS and the agency will inform the concerned individuals when there a development is detected.
