#WalangPasok: Class Suspensions on Monday, September 25 Due to Jeepney Strike

Several local government units (LGUs) and schools announced class suspension on Monday, September 25, 2017, due to jeepney/transport strike.

Here are the following areas with cl(–foul word(s) removed–) suspended as jeepney drivers and operators go on a two-day strike:

Metro Manila

Malabon – all levels
University of the East (Manila and Caloocan) – Kinder to Grade 12
Bulacan

Baliwag – all levels
Bocaue – all levels
Malolos – all levels
Marilao – all levels
San Jose del Monte – all levels

In a report published by Manila Bulletin, it stated that the two-day transport strike is lead by the Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators ng Pilipinas Genuine Organization (Stop and Go).

According to the Stop and Go Transport Coalition, at least 90 percent of the group’s 74,000 member-operators nationwide will be joining the strike which will kick off today until Tuesday, September 26.

The transport strike is in relation to the proposed phase-out of jeepneys under the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program of the government.

Jeepney drivers and operators have been protesting in the past few months on the modernization program of Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Based on the planned program, PUVs or public utility vehicles that are over 15 years old will be banned from the national highways and will be replaced with “low-carbon and low-emission technology” vehicles.

But according to Stop and Go Transport Coalition President Jun Magno, jeepney drivers and operators could not shoulder the P1.6-million loan for new jeepney units and daily amortization amounting of P800.

The transport coalition is also proposing that instead of acquiring new units, rehabilitation of old jeepneys is appropriate.
