20 Filipino Crewmen Arrested In Libya Due To Suspected Smuggled Fuel
About 20 Filipino crewmen were detained in Libya after Libyan navy seized their oil tanker due to alleged fuel smuggling.
On Monday (August 28, 2017), the Libyan navy seized the oil tanker of the 20 Filipino crew members near Philippine’s border maritime border with Tunisia suspecting that the oil was smuggled.
Libyan navy spokesman General Ayoub Kacem said that the oil tanker was loaded with six million liters of contraband fuel, which was owned by the Greek company.
The 20 Pinoy crewmen arrested by the Libyan navy are working for the Liberian-flagged oil tanker. The Filipino workers were transported to Tripoli to appear before the prosecutor general, according to Kacem.
On Tuesday (August 29, 2017), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) was now closely monitoring the case of the Pinoy crewmen detained in Libya.
“DFA instructed our Embassy to closely monitor the situation and extend all necessary assistance to our kababayan,” said in the statement quoted by GMA.
The Department said that they are still waiting for the response of the Philippine Embassy in Libya about the situation of the Filipinos regarding the allegations about the.
