According to the report of the Inquirer, it was Thursday, August 24, when the President Duterte made his way to Marawi and went to the southern part of the besieged city.

It was after the troops have finally recaptured the Grand Mosque, a place that lies at the heart of the city and also where the ISIS-linked Maute group allegedly held their hostages during the siege.

Duterte congratulated the troops for taking back the Islamic Center for it is accordingly an “indication they are nearing the final stage in ending the disastrous uprising.”

This is the third visit of the president in the terrorist-stricken place.

“I need to be with you to show my solidarity,” the president as he was quoted by the officials telling it to the troops.

Together with military chief Gen. Eduardo Año and top commanders, Duterte stayed on the intensely damaged area due to firefight for two hours said by Army Col. Romeo Brawner.

As per the report, more than 760 lives of people was taken, 595 of which are of the militants, due to the war that raised more than three months ago.

Because of this, the United States and the Australia have sent surveillance aircraft as an aid for the local troops to identify locations of the extremists who have already positioned themselves in different places ready to attack the military.

“We recovered the mosque after some resistance but not through an assault with bombardment because we wanted to preserve the structure,” Brawner said.
