Kanlaon Volcano On Alert Level 1 Due To Abnormal Condition, Phivolcs Says

Phivolcs Raises Kanlaon Volcano To Alert Level 1 Due To Abnormal Condition

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised the Kanlaon Volcano to Alert Level 1 due to its abnormal condition.

On Friday (August 18, 2017), the volcanology agency has raised the alert status in Canlaon City to Alert Level 1 due to the abnormalities detected in the Kanlaon Volcano. The seismic activity of the volcano could lead to a phreatic eruption.

A total of 244 volcanic earthquakes has been recorded by the volcanology agency since June 24, 2017, on monitoring the seismic activities of the Kanlaon Volcano. The agency was still monitoring and observing the volcano.

“Kanlaon Volcano’s seismic monitoring network recorded a total of two hundred forty-four (244) volcanic earthquakes since June 24, 2017. The increased seismic activity could be succeeded by steam-driven or phreatic eruptions at the summit crater, despite the absence of visible degassing or steaming from the active vent this year,” said by Phivolcs.

The seismologist also noted that their GPS measurement shows ground deformation, which indicates that the Kanlaon Volcano remains inflated since December 2015.

Phivolcs also urges the local government authorities of Canlaon City to avoid the resident from entering the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone to avoid any possible injuries and accidents due to possible sudden eruptions.
