President Duterte Slammed By Manila Students In Rally Ahead Of 2nd SONA

Manila Students Slams President Duterte In A Protest

President Rodrigo Duterte was slammed by the Manila students ahead of his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) next week.

On Tuesday (July 18, 2017), high school students in Manila conduct a rally raising their voices and carrying placard criticizing the president. The students even called Duterte administration as misogynist and abusive.

The activity was alleged in line with the curriculum and part of a study of the students in St. Scholastica’s College to make students more aware of the sociopolitical issues, according to Sister Mary John Mananzan, an activist nun, who’s now serving as vice president of the Benedictine-run institution.

Shibby de Guzman, a 13-year-old student who is one of the speakers at the rally said ““Why do we let them abuse their power?” referring to the war on drugs amid Extrajudicial Killings (EJKs).

The 13-year-old student said that she wanted to fight the dictatorship and asked why people allow the authorities or vigilantes to kill people easily. The student said that she wanted to stand against the abusive administration.

“Today we are asking these questions with the loudest voices, the loudest protest. A lot of people have asked how many people will be here today. The answer is we are more than enough to stand against the misogynistic, power-abusive administration,” said by De Guzman quoted by Inquirer.

Around 200 students from Grades 9 to 11 have participated the rally, which was held in front of St. Scholastica’s campus on Leon Guinto Street.

Another 16-year-old Grade 11 student named Summer Cello said that they need to stand against the administration because we are the one who will fix the problem that will leave by the present leaders.
